Meet the Teacher
Michael Hartman
Founder and Teacher, Sabaoth Agape Institute
Welcome! My name is Michael Hartman, and I created Sabaoth Agape Institute to help English learners build confidence not only in the English language, but also in everyday American life.
I hold a Master of Arts in TESOL, a Bachelor of Science in Social Studies Education, and an Associate degree in Sign Language Interpreting. My background includes teaching social studies, tutoring students, working with English language learners, and leading community-based classes. I have taught students in both formal and informal settings, including classrooms, tutoring situations, and volunteer education programs.
My teaching interests include English, American history, civics, culture, communication, and practical life skills. Through SAI, I want to help students understand the kinds of English they need for real situations: talking with neighbors, understanding forms and appointments, preparing for work, discussing school and community life, and learning about American values and institutions.
My Teaching Approach
I believe students learn best when lessons are clear, practical, respectful, and connected to real life. My goal is not simply to teach grammar rules or vocabulary lists, but to help students use English with greater confidence and understanding.
At SAI, students can expect lessons that are:
Practical — focused on real-life English and everyday situations
Patient — designed for learners who may need time, repetition, and explanation
Respectful — welcoming students from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds
Integrated — connecting English with American life, history, civics, work, and community
Faith-informed — rooted in Christian values of service, dignity, honesty, and love for neighbor
Why I Started SAI
Sabaoth Agape Institute grew out of my desire to serve students who need more than a typical English class. Many learners do not just need help with English words; they also need help understanding how American life works.
That may include questions like:
How do I speak politely in different situations?
What should I expect at work, school, church, or in the community?
How do Americans talk about rights, responsibilities, and citizenship?
How do I understand signs, documents, appointments, and everyday conversations?
How can I belong without losing who I am?
SAI exists to help students grow in English while also gaining the cultural and practical understanding they need to participate more confidently in American life.
Experience and Community Involvement
In addition to my teaching background, I have been involved in local history, community education, and volunteer service. I have served with the Washington-Wilkes Black History Advisory Committee, including work connected to local historical markers and community history projects. I have also volunteered as a guide at the Robert Toombs House and have taught community-based American Sign Language classes.
These experiences have strengthened my belief that education should help people understand language, culture, history, and community together.
A Personal Note
I know that learning can feel intimidating. I also know that students sometimes need a teacher who is patient, clear, and willing to explain things in more than one way. My goal is to create a learning environment where students feel respected, encouraged, and better prepared for real life.
Whether you are new to English, adjusting to American life, preparing for future study, or simply wanting to communicate more confidently, I would be honored to help you take the next step.
